Lucid Dreaming – Can Dreams be Controlled?
Everyone dreams. Most people dream for approximately 100 minutes each night. Many people can provide detailed accounts of their dreams. Others, however, say they can't remember if they had a dream on a given night. But then there are people who say they can go beyond simple recall, claiming they can control their dreams. This kind of dreaming is called lucid dreaming.
Lucid dreaming means that despite being asleep and in the midst of a dream, the dreamer is aware that he or she is dreaming. At least half of all adults have had one lucid dream in their lifetime, according to DreamMoods.com.
Lucid dreams give the dreamer the ability to control dreams and steer them toward a more favorable outcome.
Lucid dreaming benefits waking life in a number of ways. Foremost, because brain activity during the dream state is the same as during a real-life event, lucid dreaming allows people to rehearse an event before it occurs and helps them overcome fears and anxieties, notes DreamMoods.com.
Further, DreamMoods.com indicates that in the lucid dreaming state, people are more willing to confront threats and that, in turn, makes them more self-confident. When people achieve lucidity, they can use it to improve their skill in a sports game, rehearse for a speech, fulfill fantasies, or solve a problem.
“Not all lucid dreams are useful but they all have a sense of wonder about them,” says Stephen LaBerge a psychophysiologist, leader in the scientific study of lucid dreaming, and founder of the Lucidity Institute. “According to my own experience, and the testimony of thousands of other lucid dreamers, lucid dreams can be extraordinarily vivid, intense, pleasurable, and exhilarating. People frequently consider their lucid dreams as among the most wonderful experiences of their lives.”
People who have never had a lucid dream often dismiss the experience, claiming it impossible. But Richard Wilkerson, a dream educator for the Association for the Study of Dreams Newsletter, disagrees.
“Lucid dreaming is not only possible, it's teachable,” he says. “Some people actually experience this type of dreaming spontaneously, and pre-sleep suggestions can often influence what people dream about.”
“If you must sleep through a third of your life, why should you sleep through your dreams, too?” LaBerge says. “Begin with the question, 'How do you know that you're not dreaming right now?'”
DreamMoods offers these five suggestions to improve the odds of having a lucid dream:
1. Find a consistent way to determine whether dreaming or awake, such as checking the time on a clock and then quickly check it again. If it is a dream, the time will always dramatically change at the second glance. Check throughout the day. People can eventually become adept at knowing whether they are asleep or awake, and when they get to this point, they are well on your way to lucidity.
2. Use a counting method to enter lucidity. DreamMoods.com suggests, “As you lie down to go to sleep, start counting. One, I am dreaming. Two, I am dreaming. Three, I am dreaming. At some point, you will say I am dreaming, and by then you are really dreaming.”
3. Identify dream signals. These are objects, images, or actions that serve as cues or markers to let people know that they are dreaming. Anything can be a dream signal and is unique to each individual dreamer. Select a recurring image. It has a better chance of appearing in future dreams.
4. Use your dream signs to let you know that you are dreaming. When an anomaly or something impossible occurs in a dream, do not ignore it or try to rationalize it. Let this odd occurrence be an indicator that it is a dream. Some common dream signs include flying, walking through walls, or the appearance of someone who is dead in real life.
5. Finally, encourage lucid dreams, but do not force them, as these kinds of efforts may have an opposite effect. It is important to relax and be patient.
Lucid dreams can be vivid rehearsals for waking life. But they can be just plain fun, too. Dreamers can fulfill fantasies and increase self-confidence. In addition, recurring dreams that once left people frustrated can be overcome and result in a more satisfying dream life. Remember, it may take time to have a lucid dream, but, in the long run, the experience is worth the effort. Go through the steps and be patient. In no time a lucid dream will occur.
